General Overview

We are pleased to announce a ten-day study tour in Greece. The tour spans four days in Athens and six days in more remote locations in southern Greece. Students will be led by NSA faculty members David Talcott and Christopher Schlect, and will receive academic credit for participation and coursework related to the tour. We will visit various sites and museums, including Delphi, Olympia, Corinth, Marathon, Plato’s Academy, the Athenian Acropolis, the Athenian Agora, Sparta, Mycenae, modern Nafplio, and the National Archaeological Museum of Greece.

Undergraduate Students

Undergraduates will enroll in a two-credit elective course for Nicea Term 2026, “Ancient Philosophy in Archaeological Context,” taught by Dr. David Talcott. Prerequisite: Junior standing. The course will meet over five sessions in Nicea Term to prepare for the trip, with the majority of contact hours taking place on the tour itself in January. Course requirements will include writing assignments and presentations.

Graduate Students

Graduate Students will enroll in a course for the Fall Term of 2026, “Ancient Greece through its Material Remains,” taught by Dr. Christopher Schlect. Enrolled students may earn two credits in all, including one residency credit. The course will meet a handful of times online during the Fall Term, with the majority of hours taking place on the tour itself in January. Course requirements will include writing assignments and presentations.

Costs

Taking all expenses into consideration, we estimate the cost per student will fall between $5000 and $5500. (Key variables are air fare, incidentals, and graduate vs. undergraduate tuition.) See below for a detailed cost breakdown.

Eligibility and Application

This study tour is open only to enrolled NSA students—to all graduate students and to undergraduates who have attained at least junior class standing. Due to the space limitations, we cannot accommodate non-students—including spouses and other family members.

A note on auditors: We do not anticipate having any room for auditors. However, if auditors would like to be put on a “standby” list, please email Dr. Talcott. Auditors must pay the full Program Fee plus the applicable audit fee.

Any student who wishes to participate in this study tour must complete an application at the link below. Applications are due July 24:

Additional Information

Student Conduct

We will travel as a group, sometimes in close quarters. We will take most of our meals together and lodge in shared rooms (segregated by sex, of course). Thus our students must comport themselves in a way that elevates the experience for everyone else. The tour calls for adventurousness tempered by maturity, decorum, and patience. While there will be some limited free time, most of our days will be filled with organized activities that follow a tight schedule.

We expect students to comply with the NSA Student Code of Conduct, for we cannot abide disruptions to the trip. Students who violate the Code of Conduct during the trip may be barred from further trip activities. Note that the legal drinking age in Greece is 18. Younger students, especially any who are under age 21, take care to honor your parents by discussing the use of alcohol prior to the trip.

Insurance and Communication

The college will secure insurance that will cover medical emergencies, including evacuation costs. Students desiring additional coverage (e.g., cancellation, theft) are responsible to secure their own insurance.

We recommend that participating students add an international plan to their cell phone. This will ease our ability to communicate with one another in Greece.

Tour Cancellation

If the College does not collect deposits for at least twelve students by August 20, 2026, then we will cancel the tour and refund all deposits. We advise that you hold off on purchasing plane tickets until you receive confirmation that we have received a sufficient number of deposits.

Refunds

Once twelve students have made an initial deposit for the Program Fee, all deposits are non-refundable. (With these deposits we will secure our fixed housing and transportation costs.)

  • Initial deposits will be refunded in full if we fail to meet our registration quota of twelve students before August 20, 2026.
