Representations of Evil in Literature
On September 19, 2025, New Saint Andrews College invites you to the Nuart Theatre in downtown Moscow for an invigorating disputatio. Three of our faculty scholars will lead a panel discussion on Representations of Evil in Literature, examining how some of the most enduring works wrestle with sin, Satan, and the fall of man.
Dr. Daniel Orton will open with the Old English poem Genesis B, where early Christian imagination grappled with rebellion and temptation. Dr. Joe Rigney will turn to Christopher Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus, where ambition and despair meet eternal consequence. Finally, Dr. Jayson Grieser will unfold Milton’s Paradise Lost, with its tragic portrait of Satan and Eve. The lecture and Q&A will take place from 3:00 pm - 4:00 p.m. This disputatio is free and open to the public.
